Let's celebrate panel #400

Thoughts on this tiny jubilee and who made it possible

Some say: Numbers aren't everything. Others would have waited for number 500, but in this case I think we have an extraordinary situation to celebrate right now.

Yesterday the 400th panel has been posted. Café Obskur exists for five years now, but in the beginning of 2006 we only had 181 panels. This means that more than half of all existing panels were posted within the last six months! This I find remarkable and - well - a bit obscure as the buttons to navigate through the panels of the online comic one by one were never meant to be used to skip through hundreds of panels.

It's no coincidence that we reached panel #400 now, and it's also not due to walk-in customers in the year of the FIFA world cup.

The reason is that Café Obskur is lucky enough to have gained two regular and reliable visitors. No bribery was necessary to keep these guests. einefremde and asoul were happy to spend a lot of time on creating panels even without promising them to warm up their coffee again. Thank you two for your great support! May Café Obskur be your favourite caffeine refill institution for a long time.

But all you newcomers and walk-in customers - of course you are very much invited too to contribute to the online comic and be part a very vivid phase of Café Obskur.

As a little surprise that goes along with this jubilee I would like to announce: The news messages of Café Obskur will be available as an RSS Feed soon - available in English and German. This enables you to subscribe to the news postings (for free of course) and stay informed.

Finally: English menu available

The Café Obskur website is now available in English too.

Finally our international guests have a slight chance to understand what's going on at Café Obskur. The website is now available in two languages: German and English. We hope that the homemade translations only contain a small amount of mistakes and that the content can be understood.

We don't plan to translate the text within the speech bubbles at this time. So most of that text is still in German, but things may change over time...

From now on you have to log into Café Obskur using your personal user account to get through to the main course, meaning: Saving and adding new panels. The advantage of this change is that your identity is better protected from other people "borrowing" your username. If you aren't logged in, new panels just aren't saved and are lost. So please log in first as soon as you enter Café Obskur. If you haven't got a user you can easily create a new one here.

Just post in the new forum if you have thoughts or questions concerning Café Obskur that you don't...

For example questions concerning technical problems or storytelling related ideas. From now on there is a forum that gives you the opportunity to share these thoughts with the other guests. For a start the forum has two seperate areas for German language and English language discussions. To add new posts to the forum you have to get a user account first and log in. This should not take any longer than drinking a cup of espresso.

Working with several speech bubbles in one panel

Today we publish a recepy that describes how to add several speech bubbles to a panel without...

Today I show you how to successfully move the speech bubbles in a panel using the mouse and deal with several speech bubbles in one panel.

In the main menu press button Neues Panel hinzufügen (Add new panel).

In the empty panel press button Neue Sprechblase (Add new speech bubble).

Don't enter any text now, only press Fertig (Done): The empty speech bubble is now placed in the panel.

Click on speech bubble and try to drag it through the panel. (If this doesn't work press "Reload" button of your web browser. Café Obskur is being reloaded completely. Now click on Hauptmenü again and continue with step 1. Avoid clicking on Webcomic lesen.)

If the speech bubble can be moved on the panel you should be able to continue your creative work and add other stuff to the panel. You are now able to fill a bubble with text by clicking on the bubble in the panel. This will bring up a blinking cursor in the bubble.

TRICK: Open Café Obskur in two different browser windows. Use one instance to skip through the panels. Use the other instance to add new panles. Advantage: You are able to refer to statements from older panels.
